Do I have Sciatica?

Nerve pain in lumbar spin and sacrem

East Valley Therapeutic Massage

Mesa, Arizona

Sciatica is often misdiagnosed, and it can simply be a tight muscle.

Sciatica is often used as a branch (or all-around) term to describe many different types of pain. This can include pain in the low back, hips, legs, and feet. Sometimes it will go all the way down the leg to one foot, or it might stop above the knee and not go all the way down to the foot, stop in just the hips, or only in the low back and hips. It might feel just achy and sore, maybe tingly and numb, or in a way that is hard to describe. Sciatica can show up in many different forms and ways, and the reason it is often misdiagnosed is because there are many muscles and ligaments that can mimic the symptoms of sciatica.

How do I know if it’s a muscle causing my pain?

A common concern with sciatica is a client feeling it in the hips mostly. This is most likely caused by a muscle. There are also muscles in the hips that can cause achy pain, discomfort, numbness, and tingling down the legs. The best way to find out is to visit your doctor for an MRI to see if there are any injuries in your discs pressing on that nerve. If there are no injuries in the lumbar discs, it could be caused by a soft tissue muscle and/or even a ligament!

Would massage therapy help my sciatica pain?

If you have seen a doctor and received the clear for any lumbar disc injuries pressing on that nerve, then I highly recommend seeking out a licensed massage therapist who has a deep understanding of sciatica pain. Make sure they know all of the possible soft tissue areas including all of the muscles and ligament that could also mimic sciatica pain, the ligament is usually often missed!
